ISN Bureau, Durgapur : The polling process has commenced from 7 am across the state for the Panchayat elections today. Barring the news of unrest at some places, the rural Bengal is back again in full swing with a euphoric mood of the election festival with 5.67 crore people deciding the fate of around 2.06 lakh candidates. Voting has started in various areas of the 62 Gram panchayats of Paschim Bardhaman as well from Saturday morning under the strict supervision of the State Election Commission and the central forces.
Although the first 2 hours of voting has passed, there is no news of any major incident in Paschim Bardhaman for the time being. A total voting statistics is as follows :
From morning itself , the villagers showed great enthusiasm to cast their votes for the Panchayat elections at Jemua Vadubala Primary School in the Faridpur block of Durgapur.
The voters have assembled in long queues in front of the polling booths since 6 am amidst intermittent rains. Especially the women of Jemua village say that they prefer to vote early in the morning so that they can go back and handle their household chores.
Many of them opined that they had come to the polling station to vote early in the morning to avoid chaos. However, the opposition parties alleged that this gathering at the polling station is actually the initiation of the scrupulous process of booth jamming by the ruling party. CPM leader Pankaj Roy Sarkar alleged the gathering outside the polling station as illegal.
